The superiority of Sony Ericsson cyber shots in producing best quality pictures is deserve to be praised. One of them is Sony Ericsson C510 which have been supported by “Smile Shutter” technology.

Sony Ericsson claimed that Sony Ericsson C510 is their first product which come with smile shutter technology. This cell phone also bring many high features to attract customers. But how superior is it if we compare with the other cell phones in the same class ?

Design
If you are one of Sony Ericsson cyber-shot lovers, you might be know well the design concept. Yup, candybar!! This concept is compatible with the function as digital pocket camera. Just like the previous series, C510 has some function buttons to make us easy doing photograph actions. In the right of the body, there are shutter and zooming buttons which also function as volume button. When the camera modus being activated, the keypad automaticly transform becomes camera control button which is signed with blue backlight. In Motorola, this technology is introduced as Modeshift.

In default position, the body of C510 is not different with the previous cyber-shot cell phones. Nothing speciall in the back side body, but doff material which is used make it cute anyway. The active slide in lens cover of C510 use special switch that make it bulged. It makes C510 different from other series which only have slide mode.
C510 has a tight keypad structure with medium dimension and made from plastic material. The keys could respond well when we use it for typing any messages. But the D-pad and softkey could not, it because of the concave mode that actually would be disturbed by the higher d-pad surface.

Screen and Interface
C510 has 2,2 inch display, it’s suitable for a middle class cell phone. With TFT 262.144 colours and QVGA resolution. For protecting the LCD surface, C510 is covered with anti-scratch layer. The screen could show Sony Ericsson standart menus icon well with some choices appearance, grid mode, rotate mode and single icon. This is similar with some walkman series such as C905 and C902.
Different with W960 (Symbian) and Xperia X1 (Windows Mobile), C510 only operate Java MIDP 2.0 but it could be given additional applications. It also support 3D games.

High Features
Camera
C510 has 3,2 Megapixel camera resolution. It is also supported by complete camera features such as autofocus, flashlight and some other standart features. The interesting, C510 is the first Sony Ericsson cyber shot that adopt camera digital technology by smile shutter feature. With this feature we could snap pictures by smile detection. But, the result seem usual, there’s nothing special here. Once again, C510 also has skill to decide focus point based on face detection. Actually this feature has been showed by the previous cyber shot series. By a special box in in the camera viewfinder, the lens would looking for the focus point, after that the box would give a greenlight to show that the object is ready to be aimed.
But unfortunately the result indoor area is not as good as the result in Nokia E71 which has almost same camera resolution. The picture seem blur and didn’t clear. The flashlight feature still couldn’t change the performance because this light only work maximal for a limited object distance.
To fix this problem C510 is completed by photo editing feature that could work well called Photo fix and PhotoDJ. But the performance still depend on our aimed results. If the pictures are horrible, we couldn’t expect much for this.
Available also photo geotagging facility, but the skill still lose from Nokia N78,N79, N96 and other Sony Ericsson cell phones which could integrate with navigation via GPS. C510 only show it as cell ID appearance.
C510’s camera could also be used to record video with MP4 format and 320 x 240 pixel resolution (QVGA). We could also upload the video in the internet via video blogging feature that have supported by C510.

Network and Internet
Just like in C702 and C902, C510 provide 3G/HSDPA network with data access capacity up to 3.6 mbps. It is fast and stable enough to open WAP or WEB. 3G facility also perform well. For videocall, this cell phone has supported by speciall camera in the up side of the body. While for internet browser, C510 bring Netfront 3.4 that is usually used by Sony Ericsson and Samsung. The browser appearance looks cool by some menus and tabs that could go to online contents directly. While for browser setting, C510 provide automatic wizard setting that ease the users.

Media player
C510 still give more attention for entertainment side. We could see it by the interface which is same with Sony Ericsson walkman generations. The attractive appearance would ease us to choose photo, video, music, game or web feeds. While for memory space, it has 100 MB internal memory and Memory Stick Micro (M2). Talking about the speaker, the output sound is quite loud but not shrill. So over all the multimedia facilities are quite satisfy for a camera cell phone.

Connectivity
As a medium class cyber shot, no wonder if it comes with uncomplete facilities. C510 is only supported by Bluetooth and standart data cable. But they could perform well. For example, C510’s bluetoooth has been supported by A2DP profile that could be synchronized with headset Bluetooth to play musics via wireless. Beside that, both could be functioned as PC modem. Even we could connect them with the compatible printer to print photos directly.

Battery
About power supply, Sony Ericsson C510 comes with 930mAh polimer lithium battery. This is as big as C905, but C510 proved better with longer standby time because it brings a little wastful energy features. For once charging and minimum camera using, this cell phone could stand for 3 days.

Conclusion
It seems a little difficult for Sony Ericsson C510 to compete with other similar cell phones. Because with Rp. 2, 8 millions, the camera couldn’t perform optimal, whereas in the market today there are a lot of similar cell phones which could perform better. But if you are really anxious with the smile shutter and face detection features, it doesn’t matter to buy it.
