After waiting for so long, finally iPhone 3G officially comes to Indonesia. The phenomenal interface multimedia cell phone is ready to compete with Blackberry in the local market.

In the times before, iPhone 3G has already exist in Indonesia unofficially. Definitely this condition cause some problemmes in accessibility and selling service. Although it’s not same as Blackberry which sold together with the operator service, iPhone 3G has a high internet service called iTunes Store. Previously, this service doesn’t exist yet in our country, so we could access this in the local use. But today all could be done even it doesn’t seem optimal in digital music store. Unfortunately again, Rp. 9, 6 millions price is too expensive for many people. So, it makes own market segment. What about the perform ? let’s find out !!

Design
iPhone 3G appearance basicly is still the same with the previous iPhone products. The design is often imitated by a lot of Chinese products. Candybar mode and wide surface with a dominant portion for screen. But the difference is iPhone 3G use more plastic material especially in the back side of the body. The battery couldn’t be opened manually just like most Chinese cell phones and simcard place is separated from battery. We could also find this design Samsung SGH-F300. compared with designs in general, this is ineffective, because we have to go to service centre if we want to chance the battery when it broken.

sThe other minus point is in the gossy plastic material. It would leave fingers print in the body. Then, we wouldn’t find many buttons in this cell phone. There are only volume buttons, power and standby buttons, mute profile and home buttons under main screen .

Interface
iPhone 3G use derivation of Mac OS X as operating system. Some called it as OS iPhone, but the others called it OS X iPhone. This system provide a unique interface by Multi-Touch feature which could manipulate data by touch movement. It means the system would recognize a touch in many profiles. For example, if we want to slide the menus page, we only need to give a little touch. It would be done well. This is different with HTC TouchFlo and Nokia 5800 which often didn’t right in translating any touches.

iPhone has known as the most revolusioner Touch UI cell phones. So no wonder if we could also find it in iPhone 3G. iPhone 3G is supported by capacitive touch screen with 3.5 inch diagonal size, QVGA resolution, and 24 bits colour depth. It would absolutely show a solid picture. The grid menu could appear well with attractive icons and it has been imitated by lot of Chinese cell phones. In the upside we could add more icons, whereas in the bottom side, there are 4 icons for telephone, mail, web browser and iPod.

Just like the previous Apple products, iPhone is realyy need connectivity with PC. It ‘s not a problem for those who have notebook with Mac and Windows operation. First, we have to activate the service in the selling store, then all we need just connect it to desktop iTunes as suited software then connect it with the internet. If it didn’t activated first, it couldn’t be used for those who doesn’t have internet connection at home. Because iPhone only could work with an authorized operator service. For example in Indonesia this service is provided by Telkomsel. But there’s no guarantee if it couldn’ be use for other operators, because there are a lot of unofficial iPhone in the market which use abroad operators servise.

High feature
iPod
in the previous time iPhone is usually described as iPod that could be used for communication. Actually It’s not wrong, because with the attractive design, Apple iPhone 3G is still an entertainment product just like the previous iPod. In iPhone 3G, iPod is a multimedia software that offer many multimedia functions.

The first is music player. The supported files are MP3, MP4, AAC, and WMA. The music files transfer only could be done by this desktop music player. All we need is enter the files into computer iTunes, then synchronize them, and the files would be transferred directly to iPhone. The positive side from this mechanism, our cell phone would be more personal. It could transfer other computer music filles into our own computer. But some people say it is uneffective because usually we could drug and drop the files or copy/paste files directly without any synchronization.

Beside music player, by iPod software we could enjoy video, audiobook, and podcast. These all use the same system operation by iTunes desktop. Unfortunately it doesn’t supported with wide screen and limited video format (3gp and mp4). It supposed to be better if it also support avi divx, right ?
To support audio output, iPhone 3G is completed with 2 main facilities speakers and 3.5 mm jack audio. Even it come with separated speakers, the output doesn’t sound stereo. But from 3.5 jack audio, the output is quite satisfy.

We could use another headset or the original headset from iPhone, but there’s no A2DP profile to support Bluetooth stereo. In order to enjoy iPhone via Bluetooth headset, we have to try it by A2DP Bluetooth converter for iPod. But there’s no information about the compatibility.

HSDPA and Connectivity
iPhone 3G has supported by maximum speed data network 3.6 mbps via WCDMA/HSDPA/850/1900/2100 MHz. it would give us ease for accessing data in a huge area. For a small area we could use WIFI, it would support internet access in hotspot area. It will be very usefull for downloading files with a big size (more than 10 MB). Because HSDPA couldn’t do that. The other connection facility is Bluetooth. But in this case, handsfree Bluetooth almost use for telephone. iPhone 3G doesn’t supported with Bluetooth with capability for transferring files. The reason is to avoid the piracy. The browser which is used is Safari browser from Apple. The appearance is not too different with other browser, but it has supported by a high touch interface. This is compatible with iPhone, and use Google as default search.

iTunes and Application Store
Other iPhone 3G service is the direct access into iTunes Store and application store. But until now, Indonesian customer only could access the application store. From this, we could download applications from another suppliers, free or paid. One of free application is Facebook iPhone. It is better than Blackberry application. Facebook iPhone has a better appearance and perform. But to get it, we used to have iTune account. We could have it by registering the series number, after that we could download many applications via cell phone directly. But the condition, we used to have a creditcard for registering process. Because the cost would be charged in the credit card. Unefficient for some people, right ?
Actually there are hundreds games and appolication could be downloaded. Most of them are free such as Bandai Namco and Digital chocolate.
About iTunes, actually it is only could be enjoyed in certain countries such United states. It could serve many multimedia contents like songs, video clips, and box office movies. So far, Indonesian customers couldn’t enjoy it yet.

GPS
iPhone 3G is completed by internal GPS receiver. The perform is similar with other GPS cell phone. There are many things we could do by this GPS. Beside pre-instal Google map, we could also add photo geo-tag.

Battery
There’s no information about how big the battery capacity, but the Apple said that the capacity is better than the previous products which have HSDPA feature that waste more energy. With a normal browser use, iPOd and camera, this cell phone could be stand until 1.5 days for once charging.

Conclusion
So far, the expensie cell phone identic with office capability and data management. iPhone 3G also could perform premium multimedia product. It is perform perfectly with luxurious design and a unique interface. But the complexity in connectivity side and transfer make it unpopular, at least it would be a prolem for those who didn’t close with internet nework. Beside that the exclusivity and the high price would cause a problems for the customers.
